Cursive is a form of penmanship where the letters are joined in a continuous flow manner. It was formulated in order to have faster writing and lesser pen lifts. Many languages have their own form of cursive writing.
The basic cursive writing only joins each letter of a word but as time passed many modificationswere made in a cursive form such as looping, italics, ligature, etc. This was added to increase the writing efficiency in cursive.
Cursive writing was developed to restrain the limitations of a quill. As quill could not sustain much ink in it and had chances of leakage. In order to have proper flawless writing letters were joined. This format also increased speed while writing. Many languages adopted the joined letter format to make writing easier.
